Why do smart kids struggle with comprehension and reasoning?

Many students have solid basic skills. They decode words, know their math facts, and memorize well, yet still struggle with reading comprehension, word problems, and applying what they know on their own. The limiting factor is usually not intelligence or motivation.

Often it is a weakness in relational language fluency: the ability to quickly understand and respond to relationships between ideas, such as before/after, more/less, part/whole, if/then, and I/you. These relationships hold every subject together. When they are slow or shaky, learning feels hard everywhere.

The science behind Fit Logic

Fit Logic is built on Relational Frame Theory (RFT), a behavioral science account of human language and thinking. RFT explains how people make meaning by relating concepts to each other. That ability can be taught directly.

Fit Learning trains these relational skills until they are fluent, meaning both accurate and fast. Fluent skills stick, hold up under distraction, and carry over to new material. Every response is measured and charted, so instruction adjusts to each learner session by session.

Signs your child may benefit from Fit Logic

Parents and teachers often notice these patterns before anyone connects them to reasoning skills:

Math

  • Word problems are much harder than computation
  • Picks the wrong operation despite knowing the math
  • Trouble with fractions, decimals, number lines or negative numbers
  • Lost in multi-step problems
  • Confused by time, money and measurement

Reading & Writing

  • Reads accurately but doesn’t understand
  • Struggles with inferences and main idea
  • Can retell a story but can’t explain why
  • Trouble with analogies or figurative language
  • Writing lacks organization and depth

Executive Functioning

  • Can’t recount events in order
  • Disorganized with tasks, routines and materials
  • Struggles with multi-step directions
  • Slow to learn new rules or routines
  • Trouble switching tasks or adapting to change

Social Reasoning & Problem-Solving

  • Misreads others’ intentions or perspective
  • Rigid, all-or-nothing thinking or “fairness” battles
  • Difficulty with back-and-forth conversation
  • Gets stuck when a plan doesn’t work
  • Hard time learning from past mistakes

What skills does Fit Logic teach?

Fit Logic: foundational training targets

Sequencing

Before/after, first/next, and organizing events in time order.

Comparison

More/less, bigger/smaller, greater than, best/worst.

Hierarchy

Categories, part/whole, grouping and membership.

Cause & Effect

If/then, because, therefore: conditional reasoning.

Perspective-Taking

I/you, here/there, now/then: seeing from another point of view.

Symbolic Relations

Time, measurement, number sense, and abstract relationships.

Fit Advanced Logic: higher-order training targets

For students who have the basics but hit a wall as work gets more complex: explaining their thinking, comparing ideas, connecting topics, or solving open-ended problems on their own.

Describing

Using precise language to define and explain people, objects and ideas.

Compare & Contrast

Finding meaningful similarities and differences between concepts.

Causal Sequencing

Ordering steps, events and processes in logical, cause-and-effect chains.

General & Specific

Moving fluidly between broad categories and specific examples.

Analogies

Understanding the relationships between pairs of ideas.

Problem-Solving

Defining problems, generating options, evaluating outcomes and adapting.

How is Fit Logic different from tutoring?

Traditional tutoring re-teaches content: this week’s vocabulary, this chapter’s math. Fit Logic strengthens the learning process itself, the relational language system a student needs to understand, generalize and apply any content. That is why gains show up in subjects that were never directly taught.

Especially effective for students with:

  • ADHD profiles
  • Dyscalculia-like math patterns
  • Language processing weaknesses
  • Autism (ASD) or social cognition challenges
  • Dyslexia and other learning differences
  • Slow processing speed
  • “Bright but struggling” or twice-exceptional profiles
  • Big gaps between ability and performance
  • Weak working memory

What results does Fit Logic produce?

Standardized testing shows what happens when students become fluent in relational language skills:

+37.7percentile pointsaverage gain in listening and reading comprehension +25 wpmoral reading speedwith no explicit reading instruction +23percentile ranksin applied math, with no math instruction

Independent research has also found that RFT-based training can raise IQ scores. At Fit Learning, one student’s reading comprehension rose from the 37th to the 82nd percentile after 50 instructional hours, and Fit Learning students typically gain 1–2 years of academic progress in about 40 hours of instruction.

Results are group averages and individual outcomes vary. See our Results and Research pages for more.

What families say about Fit Logic

“Dr. Corinne and the Fit Learning Team have done an outstanding job with my now 5th grader! … In addition to Reading sessions, he has done Logic and Math enrollments. The team is excited for his successes and they are very knowledgeable in identifying when things are hard and breaking the work down to decrease frustration and help him to reach fluency and mastery of his goals in a positive learning environment. … I have seen identifiable growth and generalization of his learned skills. Not only am I seeing it, but the hard work and effort he’s put in have been noticed by his teachers this summer. I highly recommend Dr. Corinne and the Fit Learning Cleveland Team!” — Christine B., parent

Frequently asked questions about Fit Logic

What is Fit Logic?

Fit Logic is a one-on-one program from Fit Learning that teaches reasoning and relational language skills such as comparison, sequencing, cause and effect, categorization and perspective-taking. These skills underlie reading comprehension, math problem-solving, writing and executive functioning. In the Cleveland area it is offered by Fit Learning Cleveland in Pepper Pike, Ohio, and online.

What is Relational Frame Theory (RFT)?

Relational Frame Theory is a behavioral science theory of human language and thinking. It explains how people understand meaning by relating concepts, for example “bigger than,” “before,” “part of,” or “because of.” RFT research shows these relating skills can be taught directly. Fit Logic applies that research to academic learning.

What ages or grades is Fit Logic for?

Fit Logic serves K–12 students. Foundational Fit Logic suits younger learners and anyone missing core reasoning skills. Fit Advanced Logic is for older or more advanced students who need higher-order skills like analogies, compare-and-contrast and independent problem-solving.

Can Fit Logic help a child with ADHD, autism or dyslexia?

Yes. Fit Logic is especially effective for students with ADHD, autism (ASD) or social cognition challenges, language processing weaknesses, dyscalculia-like math patterns, dyslexia, slow processing speed or weak working memory. It also helps gifted and “bright but struggling” students whose performance doesn’t match their ability.

Does Fit Logic improve executive functioning?

Fit Logic targets the reasoning skills that executive functioning depends on: sequencing events, following multi-step directions, organizing, adapting to change and thinking flexibly. Parents often report better organization, planning and problem-solving at home and at school.

How is Fit Logic different from a tutor?

A tutor re-teaches subject content. Fit Logic strengthens the thinking skills used to learn all content and builds them to fluency, so improvements carry over to reading, math and writing. On average, students improved 23 percentile ranks in applied math and read faster without any direct math or reading instruction.

How quickly will we see results?

Progress is measured every session, so families see data from the start. Fit Learning students typically gain 1–2 years of academic progress in about 40 hours of instruction. One Fit Learning student moved from the 37th to the 82nd percentile in reading comprehension after 50 hours.

Is Fit Logic available online?

Yes. Fit Learning Cleveland offers Fit Logic in person at our Pepper Pike center and through live online sessions. See Online Services.
